I think this does have a possible utility for the office environment. When I was working in a physical office, I would have loved to have this device for all my meetings. It doesn't take up too much space, I can review an agenda on one side, write notes, or work with my project management software on the other side. I could see it being additionally the perfect device for a business lunch, big enough for accessing and sharing key documents and information, but not as challenging as everyone with laptops or even large tablets. If they ditch the cell phone capacity, and the camera tech, focus on Microsoft productivity (lower the price) maybe they could possibly champion this as a portable business tablet... the focus being on business....though I did enjoy seeing how it can be used as a video game console.

@Impulsive Urge yup. Something like that is enough. They should have tailor made this device for office and business use.

@Hoang Nguyen Nguyen Just a better selfie camera. If possible since they are tiny, they could make them two, front and back so you dont have to flip to take a pic.

@Impulsive Urge hmm. Maybe just one little camera dedicated to scanning documents? That can be really neat. Just enough for office use.

I totally agree, it's more for business or for people like myself that doesn't do much picture taking but likes the option if I randomly need it and use it more for bills and such. I always have the aftershock bone conducting Bluetooth headset on for calls so rarely would I need to put it up to my ear. And let's face it phones or tablets have their own set of glitches, likes and dislikes and to often people expect devices to do it all like waving a magic wand and that just isn't realistic. Everyone is different so what one might love someone else might not. I think we need to look at it's main purpose and stop expecting the impossible. I've been a Samsung owner for a long time but with that said I don't like everything about it, it just is what it is. 🤷‍♀️

It's a Microsoft product, so it's really in beta until at least version 3. I actually really like it. Get rid of the waterfall glass edge and go back to straight, plonk a flip3 style mini-screen on the front. The camera... honestly I'm wondering if they couldn't just move the current array in Duo 2 into the bezel where the selfie camera resides (and replace it). Don't see why you need both a front-facing and a rear facing camera array when you have two screens that can face opposing directions. Surely you can just use one screen when taking the picture? Do this for Duo 3, keep the price the same or less and I'd be tempted.

They could just shift the start of the window a hair away from the hinge to keep the far edge of the screen from becoming unreadable, this would just be a software fix.

I feel like a lunatic whenever I say this but I adore the concept here. if I had the money to throw around on something like this I'd love to have one. just the thought of being able to do split-screen productivity tasks with that much screen real estate sold me the moment I saw it. that being said, god why are those cameras there. i hate it. i really hate it.

@UltimateAHP i mean like yeah i'm not buying one i just like the concept. folding phones are nice, but I much prefer the aspect ratio and screen real estate on this thing. it's really just the form factor and the layout I'm into. I wish it had any chance of becoming a viable product, because I think if it did they'd also end up being a lot cheaper than true foldables since you're not paying for that folding screen tech. as it stands right now tho, you're absolutely right. it's a mediocre product, it's way overpriced, and Microsoft will abandon it

You might as well get the samsung fold 3 or the oppo fold phone if you're really into that kind of stuff. The surface duo just isn't sustainable enough for long term use with the amount of issues it has. Plus Microsoft is most likely gonna cancel this soon like they do with most failed products they've made.

The best thing about my Surface Duo was the perfect alignment of the two sides when it was closed or folded. I did not care about the camera because I rarely take pictures. I can safely say that if the first version were like this one, I would not purchase it. I also think that the $1400 price mark was too high. I bought the first phone for $1000 because I already knew that most people would not be willing to purchase a device like it. Basically, I knew that the price was going to come down. I assure anyone who wants this phone as well that the price of this one will not stay at $1400 either.

I really, really like the idea behind this device. The dual screen implementation is a neat idea and allows for some functionality candy bar and foldable phones don't have. It just can't complete with a Note or S series because they have had 10 years to perfect the UI and feature library. It also doesn't have a great form factor and the original was difficult to use for that reason.

i recently got the surface duo 1 for the much reduced price. honestly, i love it. it's my secondary device next to my iphone 12 pro max. i rarely span apps across screens, more for using two apps at the same time. this isn't a foldable tablet, but more of a device with 2 screens. it's definitely not worth the full price tag for either models. seems like the 2 has the same small bugs at the 1. but overall the duo does exactly what i need it for, so i'm pretty happy with it. why can't it read external usb drives though?? i might be missing something, but haven't been successful.

I really, really wanted to like this thing. I'm an attorney, my firm uses Surface tablets for trials and hearings, and of course we use Office for everything. OneNote in particular is something that is enormously useful. So I really liked the idea of a Surface phone with two screens, because it seems like it would be a super great productivity device that would integrate perfectly with the rest of my firm's tech ecosystem. The Surface tablets are amazing and were a huge upgrade over the iPads we used to use, for our specific use case. But all the little quality of life issues that this device has is going to keep me with Samsung. The fact that it doesn't fold flat with the screen open in particular is a huge deal breaker for me, especially because there's no outside screen. I think if there was an outside screen it wouldn't be a big deal, but if I can't have it be flat in my pocket and still be able to glance at my messages, then it's a no-go.

One of the things that never really clicked for me until I owned a Z Fold 3, is how much I would rely on the outside screen to do regular smartphone things. It's about the flexibility of being able to use it unfolded when I want to. There are some days that I never open up to the big screen - and that's okay. Knowing all of this, now, I can completely understand from a physical convenience perspective, that the Surface Duo 2 can be a pain to use, because you HAVE to open it up to use it, even if you don't want to use both screens. Combine that with the admittedly poor camera placement, and it becomes a very cumbersome daily driver for most people. Microsoft marketed the first Duo as less of a phone replacement, and more as a business-minded tablet supplement, and I think it works fine for that, but the tradeoffs make it a difficult pill to swallow for $1500. The software bugs, though, even if the phone was otherwise perfect, is unacceptable at just about any price point these days, let alone at an eye-watering $1500. Cheers to another great video, Marques.

I like this form factor. I carry two phones from two different service providers. I would love it is they could be joined together like this and share storage and apps but assign mobile services to each screen. Also, I don't think the interface needs to span across both screens. The point of having two screens like this would be using two apps at once. So like a PDF or a video on one and a text editor or email on the other. Also, it would be neat to have it display two document pages at once like a book. And of course if turned sideways one screen could become a keyboard or virtual controller. I like this idea, but they need to stop trying to make it something it isn't.

Nice upgrade. I think they need to shift the logo up and create a screen . Since the phone is flip they can make it a bit thinker and create a motorised camera that pop's up when needed.

In my old job, I had to work with Microsoft people a lot. I remember when they had NOKIA hardware for their Windows phones. Even though those were not nearly as terrible as this surface duo thing... Almost all of them had iPhones or HTC android ones as their daily drivers. The Windows phones were just to pull out at meetings or events. This might be one of the most bizarrely useless devices I have ever seen. Making MS employees use them exclusively will result in many of them "accidentally" breaking them until production stops.

A lot of the time people are designated onto a project like this against their will and then they are given a very demanding timeframe. They had at best a year to significantly improve a device that was under spec and completely different to anything before it in microsoft's catalogue. Forcing people who didn't even want to work on it to now have to use it is just cruel

So I loved the hardware of the duo and I thought opening it every time would be cool until I got the fold 3 and realized I how usable it is closed. I have been taking tons of photos on vacation and when you are moving and running as round you want a quick couple pictures then back in the pocket. Then open it and go thought everything when you get to a resting place. I think the duo needs a dedicated companion if not a third screen a watch as capable as an apple watch.

Thank you for your review. I appreciated your perspective. However, as a user of the Duo since last December, I have come to really utilize and enjoy having the two screens. I have not had the software problems you mentioned with it. I agree that the camera was far from optimal, so I am looking forward to trying the Duo 2. I believe that the Duo 2 will be better and is a form factor that I hope will continue to be available. I would not like to go back to a single screen device. That would decrease my productivity too much! The two screens on the Duo have been the right size, and not too narrow like the Z-Flip.

Really good review, i feel like it is a cool design, its an enormous phone though. I did not like that there is no front facing camera, how are you supposed to do video calls? I also did not like that because of the screen bevel you get warped pixels in the center, that is pretty much unacceptable as the duo screen function becomes pretty much useless. I really want a microsoft phone, but i cannot see myself using this. Can you even get a case for this kind of phone or do you have to go caseless and risk damaging it if you drop it? Oh well, i am not in a hurry to change phones. My stylo 5 is absolutely perfect, i wish it had more ssd space though, either way i hope they perfect this tech this year or the next as i would love to have a MS phone. Price is pretty unreasonable btw maybe $800-$900??? Also, would like the back cameras to not be sticking out of the phone.

Honestly, I think they should consider making a solo screen device instead. Design-wise, I think they get a lot more right than wrong, and I think a standard body phone with the Surface’s aluminum body would be pretty sick.
Impulsive Urge

They already did that with Lumia phones. Aluminum alone wont save them. If they did what you said then they would just simply be Microsoft branded android phones. Nothing special. A lot of companies already did beautifully designed phones but they all failed. Design alone wont save a company.

@Lee Griffiths I think it lies more in design than hardware. Sure, the specs need to be good, but outside of 2, maybe 3 manufacturers, android phones aren’t always that pretty. A solid design based on Surface computer design architecture and high end specs for a reasonable price could be just the thing to get Microsoft to actually stick around in the phone market.

A note, is that Microsoft used better glass on the inside than on the outside of the Duo 2 so setting it down with a screen down isn't as volatile than you would expect. Edit: An outside screen may be useful, but given the use case for Surface Duo I don't think it is necessary. Stuff like spanning apps, I find is better vertically, like scrolling a long email or web page or forcing the keyboard to the bottom screen vs attempting to span horizontally. There are a few bugs still that need to be fixed, but I have not seen the touch issues that you saw.

I've got the first Duo. My two expectations for Duo 2 were: 1. reduce the screen's middle gap to the bare minimum (have the two screens come nearly flush, maybe 1/2 mm away to avoid chipping, anyway, make it an almost uninterrupted large display, or else work out a foldable display, whatever). 2. Optional Windows-on-ARM boot (make it a nano Surface PRo X). If Microsoft had achieved that, which is not unreasonably difficult, they'd secure a huge following, and in a minute, erase all the bad feelings of their previous failures at making phones. Too Bad!

@Kasallamacher Well I don't know you, but I'm using one and it can be a good tablet depending on the use case. Can't carry a big tablet with myself everywhere. I would say that it is a jack of all trades, master of none, with some sprinkle of bugs that I really don't see as that bad. "Also, why wouldn't one buy the Galaxy Fold?" Good question, the 256gb Galaxy Z Fold 3's price is $1800, I bought a new 256gb Surface Duo for $389. Surface Duo has arguably better multitasking than Z Fold I believe, maybe the best multitasking phone? Galaxy Z Fold is an expensive device for sure, what makes it even worse is the fact that you can easily scratch its screen with your nail. The screen is literally a plastic, the crease is doomed to get worse. Not to mention my Surface Duo specifically is thinner and lighter. You can also adjust the hinge of the screen to say for example laptop mode, unlike Z Fold which I believe is just open and close. Honestly it is just a waste of money if you buy a $1000 phone.
Kasallamacher

@AR 7 no it's no tablet, that's the issue. And it's not like tablets aren't portable already. It's more like the jack of no trades. Also, why wouldn't one buy the Galaxy Fold?

my thoughts: that cool keyboard flip accessory fix the software no camera bump if you put a decent camera on the inside, it can be a webcam, and be in the right position in comfortable photo taking mode (folded open). maybe some swipe gestures on the rounded edges when closed to dismiss, or trigger dictation replies for messages? (wouldn't save the lack of closed functionality though)

@Andrew Marshall they were garbage, I owned a bunch of lg's because they would loose half their cost within the first year, so you could get flagship specs at a mid-tier price. but their quality was horrible, horrible cameras, overheating issues, sluggish performance, and all, i mean ALL of their "innovative" Features were half assed, glitchy, and gimmicky. the only standout feature to me was that the lg v20 had a removable metal back that you easily pop off with the press of a button, that was true genious but it came 3 generations too late ( the v20 was litterally the last flagship phone to ever have a removable battery)

It feels like the design of the original Duo was frozen before folding screens had got to where they are now - that's why it had two screens. And Duo 2 is Microsoft digging further into the same hole. At least that's how it looks to me. The buggy touch response, software and missing text is unforgivable at any price.

I really like the concept I hope it keeps getting better. Foldables are dope but no way I could ever have a soft squishy screen. Would be cool if they maybe found a way to join just the middle gap with that squishy screen at some point.

i think a fix for the form factor would be a centre hinge that could both open and close the same as the phone does now but also rotate to flip one of the displays around (the camera side) to enable another positon with one wide of the one open to a screen and the other facing inwards with the camera facing out, meaning the second screen would be folded against the back of the other to protect it while in that position and allow the camera to face forward unobstructed , aka an engineers worst nightmare

In this world of remote working and socializing with Zoom and Teams, I would have thought companies like MS would offer better single front facing camera which would double as a main back camera when folded. Yes, cameras are import but I feel like the camera enthusiasts would not go for a folding phone. Look at the top line laptops. They never have great cameras. I feel like an above mid-range camera for a folding/flip phone would be fine. Leave the top range camera for the regular flagship phones.

1. Integrate the bump into the back of the phone like the lenses are flush with the rest of the phone. 2 thicker batteries. 3. small outside oiled screen where the Microsoft logo is on one of the sides that make it the most comfortable to use. 4.Add some better cameras to the front as well as the back so u can take selfie photos closed. 5. make the back of the phone be white or black with better resistance to fingerprints. 6 improve software. 7 don’t curve that display.

I believe that Microsoft tries to develop hardware that no one really wants. I would like to see Microsoft make a single screen, premium flagship phone using the same magnesium alloy as their surface laptop line and bring back Carl Zeiss cameras from the Windows 8 Nokia phones and also bring back the Cortana assistant. If they can make a single screen premium hardware that runs Android in a stable/solid environment without too many bugs and that seamlessly connects to Windows 11, consider me a customer.

They should do a third fold out screen like that tri-fold phone. The extra screen should be thinner than the rest of the phone. Also make it thicker to eat the camera bump, but that extra thickness in one of the folds is extra battery. A long long lasting battery would be a selling point.

I agree about the entire premise being somewhat flawed, and I said the same thing when the first one was announced. Not being able to do shit without opening it, and having a noticeable gap between the 2 screens are huge flaws IMO, because then the remaining appeal is for people who want to run 2 apps side by side, but I don't think there's many people who really care about that. This ain't the future. It's clinging on to the past. If it had a proper foldable screen with no gap, a smaller screen on the outside, no camera bump (I realise that's hard to do) etc., then it would be an attractive prospect. Also, it feels like MS's software is always beta quality, even though you're running the public builds, whether it's Windows, the Xbox OS, or whatever. To have a chance in this market, you really have to nail it in every way and this doesn't come close IMO, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets heavily discounted in a few months and they don't bother with a 3rd attempt.
Ron Keller

Microsoft's fundamental flaw is they always have crappy software implementation. They fail to realise that the hardware is only ever as good as the software. What kind of quality control can they have that lets things like the missing text in the middle of the screens get signed off as a complete product?

I personally think that the larger version of this, the Neo, was a far better idea. The ability to have a laptop or a dualscreen monitor set-up on the go with a magnetic wireless keyboard is super appealing. As for in a phone, it just seems cumbersome! The camera don't fit, it's too wide for a pocket, and the whole thing appears indecisive.

Surface phone was always my dream: full windows x86 programs in your pocket. Now I don't know why I would ever need that. Folding devices are all rubbish. A developer nightmare. Why optimize apps for the Surface Duo? It would just be a hassle and in the end the devices are hardly in circulation. The cost factor is just too big to adapt apps to this display solution. Why does Microsoft always have to release such products unfinished and unthought out, I don't get it.

I wanted to switch to this from my LG V60 with two screens I always use. So I am used to the nuances of having to unfold to use and take pictures. But the cameras just are not good enough STILL. I am not downgrading from what I have for that. And the missing text in the middle of the screen could possibly be fixed with a software update, to stretch what is displayed on the edge. But its probably best that they go back to flat screens and make the bezels as thin as possible. Fix the cameras and make the screens flat again and I would possibly pick up a Surface Duo 3

1. Yes make it fully flat 2. Yes add an external screen 3. They cant blend both screens close enough with thin inner bezels so embrace the 2 screen feel and keep them wide. This avoids the issue of pixel cut off 4. Use the thicker width to go all out on battery 5. Use the thicker width to include a stylus insert area directly into the phone (like Samsung Note)

I was an original adaptor of the Windows Lumia Phone. I skipped the first Duo because a tiger never changes its stripes. That being said, I think he got a little too much into the form factor of the rear camera when the iPad Pro have a protruding Camera Bezel and you can’t lay those flat either. The price point is high, but when the competition is a Surface Pro X, or an LTE equipped iPad Air, then the prices are probably comparable and reasonable.

In terms of a "device" this is a really cool system. In terms of a phone, it's terrible. If this was your main device, there are far too many short comings for daily use.

@Ignacio Campos It's a problem if you review it as a phone first. I mean in [current year] are we really surprised that a product is more focussed on the non-phone aspects of a pocket computer?

@Eingoluq maybe that's exactly the problem

It's not a phone. It's a digital booklet with telephony. It needs to be a good digital booklet first, camera and phone last.

How do you even make calls with this thing? I mean, how do you hold it?

So this device is a straight up disaster. Now I want to preface this by saying I'm a huge fan of their Surface line up, and I think the first Duo showed a ton of promise, not to mention a beautiful design. Now I've been using the LG Velvet for over a year now with a dualscreen case, this puts in the same kind of usage as the Duo for the most part. Yes the space between the 2 screens is much larger, there is a decent camera on the back that sits flat due to the case and all that, but in general same experience. Now while I like the idea of 2 screens, I've found that I don't use it nearly as often as I would like. It's really quite large, not a single screen, and really comes down to special use cases. So I use it most of the time as a single screen. Like the Duo 2, I have the issue that I can't use my camera unless opened up, this is extremely annoying, and makes taking pictures not a good experience at all. You feel like 1 of those old people using a tablet to take pictures. The thickness of the Velvet is a lot thicker then the Duo, but I imagine the Duo 2 is at least as thick on the camera bump side, this isn't comfortable, and when you consider how big the device is, it's not helping for sure. All of this gets me to the point, when does this device feel good? It doesn't do anything closed, it can't take pictures in a single display mode, it doesn't feel good using it in a single display mode, so it pretty much becomes a foldable tablet, but is that really what you want as a phone? Especially when you can get the Fold? The Duo had a lot of shortcomings, but it's super thin design and single screen usage, at least made the design choice sound, sure the camera sucked and plenty of people didn't like it, oh and the software sucked as well, and not to mention the hardware, but at least it had a clear purpose, clear design choice. But the Duo 2 just feels like it does everything mediocre at best. Honestly if I had to choose, I would pick the first Duo of the second. But if I had to throw that kind of money at a phone, I'd just get the Fold 3, because I do feel I would use the inner screen for vids etc.

@Mike Morland It's exactly about how it should be seen. The Duo had a clear idea first how it should be seen. I think that's great. The second one threw that out. They added the camera's to get a bigger audience, but with it they made the device worse for it's original purpose.

I would hardly say this device (or the first one) is a disaster, IMO, it should be seen less as a high-end phone and more like a folding tablet.

Great vid! Looks like they stepped into the phablet arena and just discovered why no one else is hanging out in there. The Microsoft UX team just got their next year of work in one video. Masterclass review. That price too…😩
