I think its important we recognise all of the people who fought Apple to get this right to repair! Many people lots their businesses and all of their money fighting Apple in court. It's a great victory for us as a consumer but give props to the guys that won the battle for us!

It's so much a matter of how YOU feel about it - I actually enjoyed the protection of having only Apple make repairs but I totally understand that people want the right to repair it themselves. Those of us that want to can still get Apple to make the repair. We had a phone screen replaced before by a third party and they fitted a non-genuine part which was really poor quality compared to the original. They said that they were under no obligation to tell us that they weren't authorised to work on the phone, or that they'd use non-genuine parts. At the end of the day, if you use a third party to repair an Apple device in 2021, Apple still get to sell the replacement part so I guess they're happy. Their obligations to repair any damage caused during that repair are zero. As so many have mentioned, if you don't like the product, you're of course free to vote with your wallet and buy something else. Personally, I don't see a consumer right to repair as necessary but respect those that do want that right. There should certainly be environmental legislation extending the supported life-span of products, though. What's the oldest bit of working tech you own?
SirFaceFone 2 أشهر قبل
@Umar Gaming 311 It's not just "nice" to have. It affects everyone who use these devices. Whenever someone's phone breaks, they usually go to their local repair shop, and when these small repair shops don't have the necessary parts (because OEMs don't provide them), consumers are either forced to get it repaired on official stores at exorbitant prices or buy a new phone at an even higher price. It's exploitative and wasteful. Smartphones are just one example. R2R covers a lot of consumer/industrial products too (tools, tractors, etc) as the other commenter pointed out.
Umar Gaming 311
Umar Gaming 311 2 أشهر قبل
@SirFaceFone i dont think anyone is against it. Its just not that big of a concern to them. It would be nice to have tho.
SirFaceFone 2 أشهر قبل
I'm surprised there are consumers opposed to R2R. Expensive, multi-purpose products like smartphones should be repairable, period. Especially now that people are holding on to their phones for much longer and millions of phones are becoming e-waste simply because of one or two broken parts. We can't just switch brands either because other companies are starting to copy Apple's planned obsolescence antics bit by bit. Imagine if most people had to buy an all-new desktop PC because they couldn't replace one faulty component.

Even authorized Apple repair shops aren’t allowed to replace just a microphone or a charging port. All even they can basicly repair on site are battery, screen and cameras.

My cynical mind is saying this is a way for Apple to point and say, 'See?! We're allowing customers to repair their own devices!' Because they _know_ that the vast majority of people with broken Apple products will not opt for this method. Until more details are made available, and until independent repair shops have all the uncomplicated access, I'll be looking at this sideways.

Honestly I was thinking about getting an m1 mac but I was thinking ok what if the screen breaks and I have to pay like 300$ for a screen repair (I don't know the cost and what applecare covers because I never owned an apple product), I think I will pass. This is making me think hmm, especially if the cost of the repair trickles down to repair shops this is swaying me towards one

My take is that Apple will go further in the direction of tight integration between modules, grouping them in just a few blocks/components. Those will be easy to replace (by anyone), but pretty much impossible to fix due to this tighter integration. At the end, independent repair shops will also lose as their advanced expertise won't be applicable most of the time.

Apple is definitely having one of two: either they sell the highest config of MacBooks just locked down until the consumer pays for the hardware, or have actual upgradable components (which, if this really goes in both ways, Apple would hugely consider)

@Louis Rossmann I can just speak of my experience. I have little interest in being called an idiot for minimal results. I still try to support the community, to a point where I can add to the conversation, but try not to get too deep. As I said in one of my comments, there are very few people like this and IRL experience is limited to a couple of times (thus making is exceedingly rare), but enough to push me away. I however will do what I can to support people better at dealing with that than me. That said, I am still on your discord server and still join when anything major happens tho because it is exciting! Guess what I am trying to say is I love most of the people in the community, what they do and try to support as long as it is not to my detriment. Edit: thanks for taking the time to respond, my English grammar ain’t the best so it can be hard to understand what I type lol. Edit 2: just to add I still repair my own stuff but atm am far too busy to do workshops etc, that is my own limitation and not a fault of anyone else.

@Prateek Chawla It's hard for me to imagine most of the people you are talking about as toxic exist in real life. Most of that is youtube comments. You are more than welcome to come by one of these free workshops I do to meet them in person. You have groups of people with different experience levels all looking to fix their own stuff or learn, with the more experienced people tutoring the less experienced. And many of them come with their own macbooks! I haven't had a single bad experience in nay of the repair workshops I have done in person or streamed. 99.999% of the negativity is comments section stuff from people who would never say that crap in real life. If you can't come to one, try setting one up in your local community so you can meet them for yourselves!

@Bo4 Elite @catboy Honestly I really shouldn't care about this as I don't own any apple products or ever will. I haven't broken a phone I've owned in over 10 years so I've never needed to repair one. I just never liked their business practices. I felt the same way about samsung as they want to be the "Apple" of Android. I just don't like companies taking advantage of consumers but really that's just the way of the world today. But remember, they can only get away with what you allow them to. So I suggest you hold all these companies feet to the fire.
Bo4 Elite
Bo4 Elite 2 أشهر قبل
@It's Yaboi A-Dub if they already do it then it’s not gonna be any difference right so why brag about it!? They are not gonna charge you 200-300% more than what it costs now, don’t you get it!? And profit margins for example Samsung as a direct competitor is nearly the same( in phone market) so it’s not like every other company earns 2% profits off of their business and Apple earns 600%. Did you get what I mean now!?
catboy 2 أشهر قبل
@It's Yaboi A-Dub Except you’re forgetting that less than 1% of users actually fix their own devices. Apple hating sheep like you are the reason Apple gets bad rep in the first place. You complain about Apple being anti-repair, yet complain when Apple actually allows self-repair. In recent years, Apple has actually listened to their consumers and many of their products that seemed “overpriced” actually got to the point where they’re significantly better than the competition whilst being cheaper. So, there’s ZERO chance Apple is going to charge 200-300%, you just pull numbers out of your ass to try and demonize Apple. I don’t know who brainwashed you with the notion that Apple tries to milk money out of their customers when they’ve literally done the opposite.

@werundwarum “Small percentage” based on what statistics? As we all know, most people are not tech savvy, that means most people don’t know that they’re getting ripped off by a 3rd party. They think they saved a bunch of money instead of going with Apple, but nope! Oh you broke your state-of-the-art OLED display? Here’s a shltty LCD display from China. So, you’re saying 3rd party companies that do agree to their terms are given OEM components, great so there are 1,500 3rd parties across Europe, the United States, and Canada that have OEM parts! Lastly, it’s not like 3rd parties fixed anything related to the motherboard… otherwise that would require an extremely specialized person that alone costs hundreds of dollars. When Apple fixes issues like that, they literally go with a 3rd party… hence the supposed “insane” prices that push Apple to recommend a new iPhone.
werundwarum 2 أشهر قبل
@catboy do some research before talking shit about bad 3rd party repair. There is always a small percentage of bad repairs same goes for buggy apple products and especially their software. check out Louis Rossmann. Apple doesn’t sell parts to 3rd party repair shops if you don’t sign their terms/nda and do only what they want you to repair, basically just whole screen assembly and battery. No ports, smd components, ....

I think that even though people are seeing the catch here, it is a great thing. Many people will not dare to fix their phones by themselves, but many of us who have changed screens, buttons or batteries, will certainly appreciate it without having to pay extra for the job. And I hope this is something we see more in the future. Whether you like it or not, Apple is THE company everyone has an eye on them in every single aspect. Other companies making fun of them for not including earphones, then the chargers. They even made ads making fun of them to end up doing the same. In that regard, I think they are in the right path, and again, whether we like it or not, Apple is the most influential company that exists.

Apple still controls the majority in the sale of parts and tools. Apple can then set prices accordingly. Apple will most likely release phone with new tooling that are copyrighted and needing tools that are only available via Apple. This will ensure maximum profits and control 3rd parties even more. Now that apple can serialize parts and ensure profits they will control and manipulate the market further. This is a terrible idea.

This sounds really great! I hope it puts a lot of pressure on other companies like John Deer to allow and facilitate repairs and modification. (Hello Nordic Track!) Especially good for people without an Apple store near them, no one wants to send their daily device away in the mail for three weeks. I suspect it will be limited and allow Apple to make maximum profit, but of course, they are good at their job and that is their ultimate job in this capitalist society.

@Nicholas Nope its more money to them. Because now they control the prices of the tools and the parts they can charge 400 bucks for a replacement screen. Would you still want to replace your phone screen at the price point? I guess not so the next option is you rather get a new iphone rather. So its a win win for them. Overprice parts to discourage repairs so that getting a new iphone rather looks more attractive.
Desmond Richter
Desmond Richter 2 أشهر قبل
@OhMyGulay Was thinking the same they can overprice the replacement part thereby discouraging repairs and pushing people to rather buy a new iphone rather. If a replacement screen cost like 500 or 400 bucks most people would rather forgo that and rather buy a new phone . Its a win for Apple in every turn , if you buy the overpriced screen thats money to them or buy a new iphone thats even more money to them.

Its a nice first step though. Thanks Marques for enlightening the topic. I hope other companies will also start doing something for their post sales service improvement. I was a big Pixel phone's fan since beginning. But their pathetic post sales service (specially when there is no warrenty) lead me to remove myself from their fanbase. They (Google) doesn't give post sales service to their customers directly, they do it through a third party (B2X) for all their non-warrenty product's service, which is "pathetic". for an example, tell me, who on earth will spend Rs.34000 to repair a battery related issue for Pixel 2 phone? whereas we can buy a new Pixel 4A device in just Rs.25000 in India. 🤦🏻

The prices for the repair parts will be out of this world for sure :)
Fitch 2 أشهر قبل
Agree. Good first step. I am encouraged by the improved repairability of the new MBPs based on iFixit's disassembly video. But, cost and variety of parts and documentation will be what tells us how serious they are about this. At the moment Authorized repair shops have to charge ridiculous prices if they use Apple parts. If that doesn't change, they've made a meaningless gesture. We'll know very quickly if they are sincere or not.

Two years ago, i broke my MBP screen and the aluminium case got a dent. And, the cost of repair came out to be 90% of the actual cost of MBP which is when the processor, keyboard and other components remained intact. Ever since that I always tell people to buy Apple products only if they can afford the repair costs.

This is great, but what security is there for the normal consumer who goes to a third party repair shop and believes that they are getting a "genuine part" because of the price the repair shop charges. What fail safe is there for the majority consumer that they will ACTUALLY get what they pay for ? Everyone is on the hype train as usual without thinking about these important details.

It's Apple trying to stop REAL CHANGE back to customers Right To Own. Having the control over the parts, when THEY don't manufacture them is just another way of playing Monopoly. Also, if they were to be ANY seriously about it, they wouldn't open the gates with the iPhone 12 and 13. They would allow the devices that MOST need repair AT THIS MOMENT. So, I'm pretty sure Apple is yet again trowing sand at Regulatory Entities and Customers eyes in order to keep things pretty much as they are.
Erezzy G

I really think this is a way to maintain the status quo, if apple can say they do this, we don't get an overall change, and still be at the mercy of apple and their prices, and other companies. I think this is giving us a small carrot to continue us beating us with the stick. We won't get legislation that'll change it in our favor.

It’s a good step I personally like to repair my own broken stuff but like you said, it’s usually a screen or battery. The issue I could see is in resale value, how will that change, now that people can tinker with their stuff? And if people can just “fix” it how will you know it was done right? Most people Never open their phones or their macs. This is good for the repair shops.

Agree with both thoughts, same for me. I would add: take a look for a few steps further. What is next? iPhone 15-18-25-99? What if the industry can't offer disruptive technology (at the moment)? In my opinion it is going to be a kind of opening a gate to the new "market", because of our actual cutting-edge "mobile_phones" market is being oversaturated. I can easily imagine that in future people would be satisfied with same (contingently) iPhone 12-13, and later new next-gen iPhone will be revealed once in a 5 year, for example.

Louis Rossman does a breakdown of this move as it mirrors a similar one Apple took years back to convince congressmen to NOT make policy changes. They would say "look this right-to-repair group is just complaining, we already give access, there is no reason to sign this new bill." Only time will tell if this move is genuine or another attempt to manipulate the situation.

Fairphone was into that for some time already. And they allow to install other operating systems on their phones easily. Apple is still way behind, especially with planned forbidding application sideloading on iOS... We'll see how it's gonna be executed by Apple, I'm skeptical though...

I've been working in a repair shop for more than 7 years and the amount of customers who has tried to repair their phones themselves and then caused a short circuit is high. It's great that Apple is doing this, but maybe they want people to damage their phones so they have to buy a new one? It's great news for us who does this for a living, but if you don't know or feel 100% confident don't go poking around in your phone.

Well since they listed only the iPhone 12, 13 and the new M1 MacBooks, I guess one thing is that a lot more people are going to upgrade now that they think they can repair their own devices possibly cheaper. This could mean a lot of revenue for them in sales. I don't know if it's intended to be a catch, but I'm sure Apple thought about it

What would you choose, a cheaper iPhone or the right to repair? I think Apple should, as much as possible, focus on creating a reliable device than a repairable one, if we can only have one. I think this is more PR and wanting to do right-to-repair the Apple way.

Hans-Eirik Hanifl

I think the true test will be the price point Apple sets on the replacement parts. There are more ways to limit access than simply not selling the component. Placing an exorbitant price point on a replacement part has almost the same effect on the end consumer as not allowing them to be purchased in the first place.

I'm sceptical. When I read about this earlier today, I immediately thought "They will probably go like 'This is your new iPhone display. Please be aware that face ID with this display will only work on the specific device you told us is broken'." so that nobody can just stock-pile a bunch of e.g. displays. Also, the article states that parts will be available to "customers", which could potentially mean "customers who bought their device directly from Apple" and "customers of 3rd party stores and providers who first have to supply Apple with the original invoice", and thereby excluding independent repair shops. I still hope I'm wrong about it.

Apple may have realized they pushed it too far as an effort to cut down on problems with botched third party repairs and so this may be their initial attempt to correct. I really would like the option to swap out the battery in my MacBook or iPhone years after I bought it to extend the useful life of the device. This appears to be progress in the right direction.

I was previously contracted by Apple to service and repair iphones and honestly this is really cool to see for the most common repairs needed. It’s because these parts will be salvaged and sold to individuals or phone repair shops
