Everyone knows the 1984 Macintosh computer was a game changer for the tech industry. But why was this particular computer so iconic? I learn how Steve Jobs and his team took on computer giants IBM, changing personal computing forever. Living legend Bill Nye the Science Guy joins me to play Asteroids on an original Macintosh. And fellow ARface creator and Apple expert iJustine explains why the 1984 Macintosh was able to beat its competitors.

@DM The approach is to spin BS to sheep who are willing to be lead. "Everyone knows the 1984 Macintosh computer was a game changer for the tech industry." is a classic example of this fanboi nonsense that gets perpetuated by Apple sheeple as fact.

Should have had an Amiga 1000 which came out around the same time as the original Macintosh... multitasking, color (mac was monochrome), gaming/graphics were out of this world and light years beyond Apple and it's competitors. This was my childhood computer. Great review. For whatever it’s worth, when you want to exit a program like Asteroids that has taken the whole screen, hold the Apple key and hit “Q” for Quit. Also when you reboot the computer you can hold the mouse button during the boot sequence to eject the disk. Finally, the paper clip eject should only be performed when the power is off for fear of the disk write-head damaging the data. I would love to see a review of the Newton. That was way ahead of its time.

I was the only kid in the dorms who had an Apple in 1996. I still have it packed away in the closet in the box :) It made me the tech lover I am today. I was working in a computer store in San Diego when this came out. I remember watching young kids walking up to the demo unit (it had a monochrome, paper white display) and after seeing that they could use the mouse to draw pictures, parents had to drag the kids out of the store. Two things crossed my mind, this is going to be huge (first GUI for the masses I think), and, businesses aren't going to want something that looks like a toy in their office environment. I really like your Retro Tech segment but, man, I'm feelin' old👨‍🦳👨‍🦳👨‍🦳

@Hitogokochi I am also not an admirer of Jobs or his actions by any means. He is probably the most overrated figure in business.
docsav سنوات قبل
@katumispencer - You are right on about the magic effect of the GUI. I started using computers at the age of 3 on a Mac 512k, which certainly would not have been possible without the mouse and GUI. In fact, my parents not being very tech-savvy people, would not have even purchased a computer until about 10 years later if not for the wide usability of the Mac.
docsav سنوات قبل
@Hitogokochi Dealers of Lighting is a great book about all the crazy stuff Xerox Parc came up with. According to Xerox insiders, Xerox had no interest in capitalizing on the GUI driven Alto as they simply weren't in that business. However, at the time Jobs came around, there was restriction on who could come in and see the work on Alto. The perception by engineers at PARC is that Jobs paid a good chunk of change to Xerox to come in and see it a couple of times and get details. I wouldn't say Jobs stole the Alto GUI, or that he really bought it, but he was definitely given access at the right time and place to capitalize on it.

My dad had one of these when I was really young circa the 90's and he had a bunch of obscure games people had made for it- or perhaps the place he bought it from included them as a bundle from a previous owner. There was a lot of really intricate artwork created pixel by pixel for those things often that had a very gothic look because of the primitive pixelated medium with the black and white, yet while also being very skillfully made - enough for your brain to infer the scene accurately but with imagination- an intrigue modern tech has lost a bit.

This video was rather deceptive though.... Because everyone who lived at the time knows the Mac wasn't the most portable highly successful computer at the time.... Because that was easily the COMMODORE 64, the highest selling all-in-one computer ever made. All you needed was for there to be a TV or any monitor where you planned on using it. Really deceptive of her not to show it, and it's 16-bit powerhouse successor the Commodore Amiga 500.

It only show PC from 4 years prior and then that's it. In the mid/late 80s Mac was a big deal, but it was out-sold 10-1 by the regular PCs still. It was the underdog for a looong time. Also, It would have been nice to show when the PC's started adopting the Mac concepts like the mouse and OS style

I just love Apple, it made my childhood. I work in IT and my first experience with a computer at all was an Apple and was one of the early beige Macintoshes in elementary school (I want to say the Macintosh IIGS, but I can't be sure. All I know is it was something setup similarly with peripherals and drives). The need to upgrade was much slower back then, so although the Mac I used heavily in elementary school was made in the 80s, by the time I was there it was the very early 90s and still considered new tech and cutting edge/latest and greatest. I remember treasure math storm, kid pix, and learned how to use real floppy discs, etc. There were so many great experiences using that computer. I was never able to actually get an Apple computer till I was an adult because of how extremely expensive they were even back then. My parents could completely afford it, but it is understandably ridiculous for any parent to buy their kid an $1800+ computer, and much more so back then. I still always admired and marveled at my experience with one and all of the things that were being worked on and released by them growing up, just to be around it. Also, once again after Steve Jobs had returned to breathe back that old classic life into Apple, which by then, I was moving from a pre-teen into my teens. Then it became a whole new classic era for Apple once again.

I lived through all this, as my first computer was an Apple II and I had one of these 84 macs at launch. I’m not sure which was first but Take One for the Apple II was a surprisingly capable animation and drawing program. You could do elaborate multi scene “movies” and even program elements. When I founded Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot, the Last of Us etc) with my biz partner in the 80s we used Take One for the graphics and animation on some of our first games. Eventually as a paint program it was replaced by Deluxe Paint and then Photoshop (which I’ve been using for almost 30 years!)

Honestly, we've been impacted by Steve Jobs, not by Apple. They're no longer the company of innovation. They're no longer the company of the Macintosh, the iPod, the iPhone. Hopefully they can get another visionary like Jobs one day. Not that they don't make good tech anymore, they just don't make tech that literally sets the standard anymore. Your computer is still more like a Macintosh than a Macintosh was like anything before it. Your smart phone is still more like the original iPhone, than the original iPhone was like anything before it.

Naughty Dog is owned by Sony, so of course it’s PS exclusive. MSFT owns lots of developers too (in fact they bought a ton today). Just how the console game is played so to speak.

it saddens me that your company is always PS exclusive. i'l probably never get to play these games.

I'm a Japanese Apple fan in the second year of middle school! This is a great video! I'm glad I can trace the history of Apple!

This is probably the best original Mac video out there. Although I thought the Bill Nye section was annoying filler and wished that section of the show was used on someone more integral to the conception of the Mac like one of the original team members who engineered the Mac.

Thank you for this. The Apple 1 OS (original Mac) was my very first experience with a computer. I even have the sticker. As a boy I worked on it for hours each day - I fell in love with Mac paint. I worked on Macintosh computers for years, and I could NEVER understand the hype around all of my friend's "IBM Compatibles" with DOS and windows. In fact I couldn't get my head around how those computers even worked which is a testimony to how simple and beautiful this machine was. I had been doing things on the Mac for years before they had even discovered these abilities on their computers (I was a true non-nerd and beginner with computers). This computer was so far ahead of it's time; in some ways computers we work on now are still catching up (I'm typing this on my M1). I'm not a fan-boy, just a truth-teller and it's my opinion that in the future this computer will be recognized as the catalyst for the information revolution; I really mean that.

I had heard about the Macintosh but I didn’t know what it was like in action. It’s so cool. You just know how to use it without thinking. Man, this is so cool 😎 Thank you for making this video😇❤️

When talking about the Mac there's a whole another level to the story with the Xerox Menlo park field trip where the Apple guys first seen a pc mouse. The simulations development of the Lisa. Insistence on a black and white display and just SO much other drama around it. There are some GREAT movies about this time period. I love Pirates of Silicone Valley. Very good movie. Lots of very accurate history.

too many people are unaware on how influential Apple was to the entire personal computing industry early on; most think Apple's success started with the iPod or iMac but that was the start of their second wave of success

Even fewer are unaware of the Amiga and ST or even the Archimedes. You might say the Amiga, with its custom chips, was years ahead of Apple.

I was a freshman in high school when the macs first came out. We were blown away by the letter quality onscreen font. Previously screen displays were dot matrix . Really a remarkable piece of tech for its time. This Mac was actually the preferred computer from 1984 thru the early 1990s.
