Perhaps the biggest question for Fairphone that wasn't addressed here is if the motherboard can be exchanged for a new one with a faster chip. That would REALLY make this an upgrade-able phone.

Unfortunate reality but it's a reality.... for the individual, who now engages so heavily with their phone, "sustainability" is a low priority, and more effectively expressed elsewhere like diet and transportation. And Fairphone is sabotaging their own "sustainability" objective by making components replaceable but not upgradable. A perfectly maintained Fairphone will grow slower and make less efficient use of the user's time because of this inability to upgrade.

I’ve been wondering why phones didn’t have user-replaceable modular components like this for years. The fact that this exist is absolutely incredible.
Dawid
Dawid 9 أيام قبل
@Bill K The problem here is that this is not sustainable. At my end I don't care, I took the flip3 and have extended warranty and insurance on it, but that means Samsung wont repair my phone replacing whatever is broken (some parts are impossible to replace without replacing most of the phone), just take it and give me a new one. That is super convenient for me (especially with the folding screen that I assume will break at some point just by using it), but it's not so convenient to the environment or people who get paid bullshit money to dig up resources so I can have a nice futuristic phone sitting on my lucky ass in EU.
Jeremy Hanson
Jeremy Hanson 20 أيام قبل
@Tom Persons fairphone is mediocre because you cannot have a sustainably repairable device that has the same feature set as the current or even more recent generation of smartphone. The reason you can't just pull it apart to replace a battery is because it's glued together. The reason it meets an IP68 rating is because... it's glued together. Unfortunately, it's much harder to design a device to achieve and maintain those water/dust resistance ratings without using glue. When people say stupid things like 'they glue it together so you can't replace the battery so you have to buy a new one it is planned obsolescence, see?' they are really being ignorant of the fact they added glue to make the phone dust and water resistant, making it more durable, less likely to break, less likely to need to be repaired or replaced... The feature set of a standard smartphone are a counterargument to anything someone has to say about planned obsolescence. The device should last you longer to begin with because it is less susceptible to death from every day use, and less likely to die from incidental use. The design of the phone has been intentionally made to be more robust over the last decade, so you shouldn't need to extend the life of your device through repair. If it's better quality to begin, that's why you pay $1000 for it instead of buying a $300 phone. If I wanted a $300 phone, the features and quality that come with it, why would I buy a fairphone for $700? I'd rather spend $300 more and get a better built device or spend $700 on something else that costs $700.
Tom Persons
Tom Persons 20 أيام قبل
@Jeremy Hanson a final, final thought... what other piece of tech do you spend $1000 on every 2 years?
Tom Persons
Tom Persons 20 أيام قبل
@Jeremy Hanson just a final thought... I was only summing up what Marques was getting at in the video. The reason Fairphone is mediocre is for exactly all the reasons I mentioned (and that Marques originally postulated), you can't be cutting edge and sustainable at the same time "from a profitability standpoint". apple or Samsung could definitely do the exact same thing that Fairphone is doing, but at the cutting edge of technology. Unfortunately if they do that, their business could become unsustainable

@Fairphone you should try to make a phone like this but with Gorilla Glass 5 or 6 front and back, aluminum sides, 8 core processor Snap 855+ and cameras to keep up with Samsung S10 or the Google Pixel 4a with at least 8GB of RAM Please make the Screen OLED with at least 3040x1040px, 60Hz, you could maybe buy the screen from Samsung And please include a charger adapter and cable, it will do a lot to prevent waste from millions ordering new ones on Amazon.

I know I'm way way too late. Since your dealing philosophy is sustainability I'm pretty much sure I know the answer to my question I'll ask it anyway. If there was a traction for a smaller screen phone would you guys make it? These giant damn screens make phones inoperable with one hand and it is annoying as hell. I have this Samsung galaxy j5 and I love size of it screen size 5inches and phone 5.6 inches. I not only can't care less how thin phone is I like the thicker since again it makes phone less slippery and give the damn thing more grip. Practically is gone everything in tech now is just a dick measuring contest and it's annoying. However I'm looking to replace that Samsung. It's in mint condition not a scratch however the bloat makes it so that it is only useful for messaging and non video calls. What I'm saying is if there's a chance that you guys might make a smaller screen phone I can wait for few years with that bloated garbage in my hand. I already have big screen phone so I don't need another one :/

Great review! I watched it on my Fairphone 3. I bought it two years ago. Last year, I installed an upgraded camera. Just a couple of weeks ago, I replaced my damages usb-c port. Looking forward to at least 3 more years of using this phone. Recycling your old devices is a great idea, but also remember that the most sustainable phone you can use is the one you already own. So don't buy the latest if your current phone will do and make an effort to keep your current phone running smoothly. Finally, one thing that wasn't mentioned in the video is that these phones are assembled in Chinese factories, but that Fairphone ensures fair wages and working conditions for factory workers. Cheers everyone!

@seeibe I'm well aware of how bad Apple is for the environment, I only mentioned how they supported devices for the longest out of any manufacturer. I think saying "if you don't support devices with software updates for longer than every single other manufacturer on the market, you're not environmentally friendly" is strange and overly pedantic. The Fairphone has had a large effort poured into it to ensure it uses environmentally-friendly metals and completely recycled plastics, something many manufactures don't bother with at all. Apple's whole business model is selling underpowered devices for just as much as their powerful counterparts, and in exchange for charging more for less they offer support for those devices for a lot longer than the other companies can. For a tiny company like Fairphone, it just isn't possible to compete with Apple in that regard. All this without mentioning that the Fairphone is completely open to installing third-party ROMs and OSs onto it, so even in five years when the Fairphone 'stops' receiving updates (or rather, Fairphone is no longer guaranteed to release updates), you could still easily install a community-maintained ROM that is kept up-to-date. Just as MKBHD said in this very video, there is no such thing as a 100% perfectly environmentally product, but the Fairphone is just about the closest anyone has ever gotten.
seeibe
seeibe أشهر قبل
@Down200 Apple is notoriously bad for the environment (throwing away entire boards and devices even though they could be repaired easily, telling their manufacturers not to sell parts to third party repair), so, nope, if you can't do significantly better than Apple on the longevity of your devices I don't think you get to call yourself an environmentally friendly company.

Despite its flaws, I have to say it's commendable that they're doing this. I hope they receive more & more funding truly. Even IF at the very least you're able to replace *only* the battery in your smartphone, that's almost akin to giving it a second life. Add your fast charging tech & it's quickly another extra 2-3 yrs by the effort of a few minutes opening and replacing the battery!

Honestly, I've had two flagship phones from Oneplus (the 3T and the 8), and I've basically come to realise that, the way I use my smartphone means that I don't need a flagship smartphone. Repairability however would be such a big feature for me, that I'd happily go for a mid-range phone rather than a flagship phone just for that repairability, when my Oneplus 8 finally croaks. Looking forward to seeing what Fairphone will do in the future.

It's bright enough for outdoor, colors are accurate, neither too extreme or washed out. You lack 120hz tho. Bigger downsides for me are that the speaker is, despite being loud, not the very best. @Franz Hörnig and I'm pretty sure the $2 bucks extra a month or whatever additional chump change that Failphone pay to their subcontracted Chinese sweatshop workers and African miners vs the likes of Apple isn't worth me paying an extra 400 Euros for, on top of what is basically equivalent to a Galaxy A12 without the headphone jack for 4x its actual market value. I'd rather buy a much better phone with a headphone jack and an upgradeable + replaceable battery (like an LG V20, that has replaceable batteries in sizes from 3200mah up to 10000mah) and donate the difference than fill Fairphone's virtue-signalling CEOs fat wallet in Amsterdam. Once they publicly show how much of their mark-up goes to their workers and how much to their devs and themselves, then I might reconsider once they make an actual decent phone (because this ain't it, chief).

Unless we actually stop buying their phones, there's unfortunately not much reason for other companies to take notice. And in this particular case the issue is that instead of getting a FairPhone, you could get an equivalent old, used phone for a much lower price, which would be even better for the environment. So while I applaud them for what they're trying to do, I don't see it as something that could really shake up the market at this point in time.

Thank-you for this video. Honestly the only thing that break first on majority of the phones today is the glass display, it never happens to be. They used to be made from plastic and just doing fine. I think the futur phone must come with solution that make to swap the entire display easy, without the pain needed on going into complex and risky surgery. I personally never swim or bath with my phones, they can wait. I have dropped my phones (not water proof ) from year 2004 in the water , they just return to working state just fine. so there is no real need for the 100% water proof phones, they tend to use a lot of glue that make them impossible to repair. Samsung they still make the Galaxy Xcover 5 with removeable battery and plenty of screws and seals instead of glue. I use to have a Nokia 3310 that i have recycled it. I have plenty of regrettes. although today I have kept my 2 oldest Nokia 3650 and HTC Desire Z. 😍

@konishiwoi honestly even iPhones are insanely easy to physically repair, it's just that the parts are paired to the phone for arbitrary reasons. They're probably the easiest phones to repair otherwise, though.

"repairing" this phone is on the same level as swapping the batteries in a GameBoy. But yeah, I guess even such basic inconveniences are too much for the average user these days. Need an excuse to buy a new phone every few years I guess.

@Bloos You don't understand what a non-profit organization means... @Sumith Singh "corporate greedy smartphone companies" Lol, the sole purpose of EVERY company is to make money. They're already a corporate greedy smartphone company. If Fairphone was doing this purely out of the goodness of their hearts, they'd be a non-profit organization. But they're not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts. They're doing it to make money. Because they've identified a niche role in the smartphone where they're not directly competing with Samsung or Apple, or really anyone at all for that matter. And they went all-in, gambling that people would see them as the moral and righteous nature-loving "good" company. Their survival depends upon the public not thinking of them as just another samsung or apple. They have to be the "good guys" in order for their company to survive. As you could see in the video, the actual specs and shape of the phone are hugely inferior to the pixel 6. And yet, the fairphone and the pixel 6 are the same price. The only reason anyone would buy the fairphone is because of their sense of morals and values. They want to support the "good" company, fuck google.

Potentially, but you could imagine some cases where what is good for the customer (repairability, for example) is bad for the business and its investors (inability to charge high margins on repairs, less recurring revenue on sales of new models, less participation in the secondary market). Some companies are able to raise capital despite these headwinds and develop their product to catch up to or exceed legacy flagships (e.g., Tesla) while others fail to get customers to value ancillary benefits to get the capital they need to grow and develop their product. Timing and consumer trends matter to form a view on whether they'll be able to "get there".

If the Fairphone company with a few dozen million dollars in R&D can make something like this, it is totally possible for the giants at Apple, Google and Samsung to definitely do better in terms of specs and reliability. Phones are at the point now where we don't need more from them. So, focusing on making parts repairable is a key thing we could be focusing. What they don't realise is that people want to reinvest in the stuff they already own, people will come back for broken parts and upgrades over time and even if the reliability isn't perfect, it ultimately would result in them making more money from the extra parts sales anyway, and economies of scale would lower the cost of each part, making the phones totally marketable.

@Mikko Mengullo Yeah, but the Phoebus Cartel's Scheme shoudn't go this far, making stuff unrepairable. A phone should be able to last at least 3 years, with some repairs if necessary. That is the repair we are trying to make possible.

Two Dutch initiatives in the link section, Fairphone and TeamSeas. Makes me proud to be Dutch :-) I have a Fairphone 3+ (upgraded camera) myself, am very happy with it although I have to agree on the camera, it's not very strong in low light conditions. But if I want to take really good photos I'll take my camera instead. One point I missed in the video. Fairphone not only makes the hardware easy to repair (or upgrade sometimes), also the software is updated long after other companies stop support. My Fairphone2 (which I gave to a nephew) got Android 9 just before I gave it away, and I saw they are planning a new one as well. That phone is at least six years old! That also enhances the lifetime of the phone!

@JM I agree to your point, my issue is with the modular option of replacing parts compared to if it stops working to upgrade. The type of person who would be willing to take apart the phone to swap a part are the type that upgrade regularly and have a tech like mind. The older generation that is ok with an outdated phone isn't the market for self repair in the 1st place.

Same. Technology can keep speeding away for whatever reason, but I don't actually need my devices to be penis extensions. The hardware will come regardless if we give it time, even with sustainable practices, so I just find myself wanting to put more and more of my money where my mouth is. I'm living at minimum wage and have a ton of debt to clear, but once I get those things out of the way this will be the company I vouch for. For now I buy my phones second-hand anyway. Also, I've read Fairphone's Glassdoor reviews, and though there seem to be issues here and there it's nothing I haven't seen about other companies. For reference on what I mean, I don't count "I can't earn enough to buy a villa by making it to the top of the foodchain" as a good point when we clearly need to change how we live.
